Evalutation 7 - Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Camera

Camera shots:  For our Preliminary task we didn't use very many different camera shots, the only one that we used was a long shot and that was when Niall walked into the class room and walks up to me. After we did our Preliminary task I learnt how to use lots of different camera shots, so this is why we used a lot more in our film opening, for example we used a close up of Faye when she was walking into school to face everyone the next day, we used a close up to show the audience the emotion on Faye's face so they are able to see how she feels and then they are able to relate to her. We also used shots such as long shots and lots of mid-shots.

Camera angles: We used lots of high angle shots to try to show the hierarchy of the characters, an example of this was when the Triple L's were walking up the stairs in order (Lucy first as she is the main mean girl, then Lizzie then Lana). We decided to do this as we wanted the audience to be able to see this and then it would make the opening more clear.

Camera movements: We didn't use movement in our Preliminary task but we used it a couple of times in our opening, we used tracking in the scene when everyone is walking  up to the house this is to make the audience feel as though they are involved.
Framing
For our Preliminary task we didn't really think about framing as the setting we were in wasn't the setting it should have been so we had to improvise. Whereas for our opening we concentrated a lot on the framing of the settings, we also used them in our film opening because we felt more confident using them than we did when filming the Preliminary task. This was used in our party scene, we used a long shot to be able to fit in all of the props of the alcohol bottles as they were at the side of the frame so a long shot was needed to fit everything in. We also used a long shot when Faye walks into school, this was so we could fit in the school  sign in the background. We did this to show the audience the setting of the school.
Use of titles
For our Preliminary task we didn't use any titles, so for our opening we had to learn how to do this. The main title for our opening was 'OMG' this font was 'Goudy Stout', it is a serif font as we wanted it to be clear and easy for the audience to read. The title appeared in unison with the three Triple L's saying each letter, they appear at the bottom of the screen one by one in a very large font so its what the audience are concentrating on. The reason we positioned the title here was because then the audience can see the characters facial expressions as well as the title. The fact that each letter appears individually by the use of a transition it makes it more dramatic as they appear fast.
Mise-en-scene
Lighting:  The lighting we used in our Preliminary task was the same throughout the whole film. For our opening there was a change in lighting during the party scene to show that there was a party. During the party scene we also used slight strobe lighting from apps on our phones to make it look like more of a party scene.
Props:  In our Preliminary task we didn't use any props, but for our opening we made sure to include lots as it would help to show the audience the type of film opening we were making. We used several props including, alcohol bottles, a phone and a selfie stick. All of these things allowed us to show the genre of film we were trying to portray, for example a mobile phone as teenagers are known to be on their phones all of the time, also alcohol bottles were used to show how rebellious teenagers are as they are shown to underage drink. As well as this a selfie stick was used because its very popular with teenagers and it is a trend, and teenagers are known to follow trends.

Setting: For our Preliminary task we only used two settings, a classroom and a hall way. This is why we knew we would have to use more settings because we knew it would make the opening better. We used several different settings, we used Abbie's kitchen for the party scene, Abbie's bedroom for the scene where Faye gets caught in bed, my bedroom for when Faye wakes up for the morning of school and a school for the school scene.

Costume: In our Preliminary task we only wore one costume as it was just in one setting and was only filmed to show that it was one day. Whereas for our opening the characters wore two different outfits, this is because the outfit that they wore for the party scene was a lot more dressy than the one they would wear to school. For example to the party Charlie was wearing a shirt and the girls were wearing dresses/skirts but for the school scene everyone was wearing jeans and a top as they were at school so it had to be more casual.

Editing

For our preliminary task we only used editing to put the match on action and shot reverse shot together, so it was very basic editing. But for our teen angst film opening we used a lot more editing skills such as adding lots of titles that appear on the screen. Also we added a voice over from the main character because it is done in other teen angst films such as Easy A when she is first walking into school. We also added slow motion to make part of the opening more dramatic and to make sure the audience knew that was the main part of the opening. One of the main edits we did was add in a rewind in the beginning of the opening, this shows what the whole opening is about. Edits we did in the opening are a lot more advanced than the ones that we did for the preliminary task.

Evaluation 6 - What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

The most common use of media technology that we used was computers, all of the clips and audio we used was all stored on here. This is also how we put together and edited our film.
We used Premier Pro to edit all of our footage and put it all together with the use of transitions, titles/text and added our non-diegetic music. We used premier pro because its a easy to use computer programme and allowed us to do make any changed we needed to, this included slowing and speeding up our footage, also rewinding and creating split screens which made our opening the best it possibly could be. As I was more confident with using these types of computer software I was the one that was in control of the mouse but the whole group was involved in the choices we made.

The computers we used had lot of different software's that we were able to use to create things such as the production company logo. We tried lots of different computer programmes to try to create the company logo to see which one would work to create the exact one we wanted and the one we ended up using was Photoshop. The reason for this was because we wanted to add a crown on top of the 'Q' in 'Queendom' and when we tried this on word and power point but it wouldn't work out the way we wanted.

The cameras we used helped us out a lot as it helped us import the footage from the camera straight to the computer. Everything that we recorded was kept on the camera this meant we could just store all of our footage on the camera until we were happy with it then could quickly and easily be uploaded on the computer to edit straight away, this really helped to speed up the process.

I used PowerPoint and word a lot through out the process to put together the information for my research and initial ideas. I used power point because it was an easy way to turn any document into a JPEG so I could easily upload it to my blogger. I used word to create the script so we could just copy and pasted it onto blogger. By doing all of this on t he computer it meant that all work that was done was all kept together and didn't mean that it would be easy to lose any loose bits of paper that were important.

Evaluation 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

Demographics

Age: The age of our target audience is for teenagers, but more specifically ages 13-19.
Gender: Both females and males are able to watch it but our opening is more aimed at females because they will be able to relate to it more as there aren't many male characters in it.
Class: Mostly will be aimed at working/middle class people as the settings and lifestyle of our opening and the characters in it is more similar to that class. This will make it more relatable overall.
Race: Our opening is more aimed at white British because this is the only race in the opening.

So overall, our film is aimed at teenagers aged from 13-19 that are mostly white British females that are working/middle class because we feel as though they would be the people who would relate to our opening the best as most of our characters are the same.

Psychographics

Interests: Teenagers usually spend their free time going to parties and spending time with their friends, as they are very sociable similar to the party in our opening they like being around good friends. So this way, the teenagers that watch our opening will be able to relate because they will be doing the same in their everyday lives.
Teenagers also have a lot of interest in music and the music we have in our opening is very similar to music teenagers listen to, so by having that in our opening it will make them want to carry on watching.
Beliefs: Our opening is very relatable as lots of teenagers knows how it feels to fall out with friends and make mistakes that they massively regret. This allows them to be able to put themselves in the characters shoes and know what's going on in each of their heads.

Evaluation 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Mean girls

These are the 'mean girls' from our film opening and can be compared to 'The plastics' from mean girls and they are both stereotypical but also challenge the stereotype. The postures of both of the groups of girls are very similar, they show that they think they are more superior to everyone else. The looks on their faces show that they are moody and 'mean', also both of their outfits are very fashionable and also have long, well looked after hair and you can tell that they take care of their appearance. The lighting in both photos is very bright and there is a light directly on them. They also challenge the stereotype for mean girls because all of the mean girls in our opening have ginger hair, and the main mean girl also has ginger hair, usually they have blonde hair as people associate blondes with being ditzy, pretty and just overall usually the mean girl. In our opening our main mean girl is ginger which are usually shown to be the nerd/unpopular girl like in mean girls and easy a for example, so by challenging this stereotype it makes the overall film more interesting.

Protagonist

This is the protagonist of out opening, we have kept it very stereotypical for our film in the way of the main character is liked by everyone and is seen as very innocent. Although, our character is seen as very innocent until the film goes on. The pose of both of them are very similar and also they are both smiling with shows their innocence, also their outfits are similar, they are both wearing leather jackets, tight jeans and low cut tops which is seen as very fashionable. The lighting used in both photos is bright which connotes a happy environment. One thing that challenges the usual stereotype is that the character that is playing the outcast is not usually blonde because they are normally seen as the mean girl, Jo from Mean Girls 2 is one of the only other films I have seen that uses a blonde for the protagonist.

'Heartthrob'

The heartthrob of our film opening is very stereotypical and is very similar to the heartthrob Aaron Samuels from mean girls. They both have dark hair, although Aarons is longer and covering his face more and Johnny's is out of his face and gelled up. The settings for both of the photos are very similar as well, because they are both taken in a school, also the lighting in both are quite bright but with shadows in the corner. They are both smirking in their photos and looking directly to the camera, this shows that they are both confident and slightly arrogant. They are also very similar in their films as both of their ex's are the main mean girl and then the more unpopular girl gets involved. Also their outfits are quite different, Aaron is wearing a shirt whereas Johnny is wearing more of a causal outfit although both still fashionable.

Generic gay character

The gay character that we have in our film opening is a very stereotypical character because he is very similar to Damian from Mean girls. This is because they both have a lot of girl friends and their best friends are girls, but also from first glance you wouldn't just assume they're gay as they wear the same sort of thing, tight jeans and a boyish top therefore you can tell they care about their appearance as they are still very fashionable and they care about what people are thinking of them. They are both very catty and love knowing the gossip and being involved, as well as this they both like being the centre of attention and when they start talking you can tell they have quite a few feminine qualities. The type of setting they're in shows that they are very happy, outgoing characters because they're standing/sitting in a bright environment with a light background behind them, they also both have dark hair.

Evaluation 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

1st frame - Costumes and props:
The first frame shows both costumes and props, the prop we used in this scene was a selfie stick, we used this because it shows teenagers and what they do at parties. This also shows that they are young, also we used this to introduce the characters using 'selfies' which is a very modern thing to do so this shows that they are teenagers as teenagers are very up to date with the newest technologies and trends. The costumes of the characters are just casual but fashionable and are clothes that you would see in teen angst films the kind of teen angst films that you see clothes like these are ones such as wild child, mean girls as in wild child the protagonist is very up to date with the newest trends and is always wearing the nicest clothes and making sure she always looks nice, which is why she is similar to the characters in our film opening.

2nd frame - How the characters are introduced:
The second frame shows how the characters are introduced, we decided to use selfies to introduce the characters because we had never seen it done before in other teen angst films but it also shows that it is a teen angst because lots of teenagers use selfie sticks. The poses that each character does in the photo represents how the characters personalities are. For example, the character shown in this particular screenshot is Faye and she is smiling because her character is very innocent and happy throughout the opening.
3rd frame - Special effects:
We used a variety of special effects in our opening, but the main ones were called 'dip to black', 'dip to white' and dissolve we also used a forward and backwards clock effect which we used to show the fast forward and rewind of our opening.
4th frame - Editing:
The fourth frame is one type of editing we did, this is the split screen we did to make the scene of when Faye is confronted by the Triple L's this makes it look more dramatic and shows that they are walking up to each other face to face. It shows all of the characters, which shows the audience all of their emotions as they walk up to eachother. Also a split screen is used in mean girls, it is used when the 4 main charcters are all talking on the phone to each other, they use a 4 way split screen.

5th frame - Main title (font and how it appears):
The fifth frame is of our main title, this appears by each letter appearing in unison with the triple l's saying each letter, when the letters show up on the screen they come up in slow motion. We did this to make it more dramatic and to show it at the same time as when the most dramatic part of the opening happens. We chose to use 'OMG' as the title because it is short and snappy and it is an acronym for 'Oh My God' this is used by teenagers in text talk. Also it is in pink because pink is a stereotypical colour for girls, the font is 'Goudy Stout'. We used pink aswell because films such as 'Mean girls' and 'Angus, thongs and perfect snogging' and we liked how this looked on these films.

6th frame - Story and how the opening sets it up:
The opening sets up the story because it shows you what the whole film would be about without giving too much away. The sixth frame shows just before when the Triple L's go and find Faye in bed, this is when the main story line of the opening happens and the way it is set up is that each charcter is introduced by a voice over from Faye and then the writing appears on the screen with a little bit more information saying "lucky i'm friends with them" which indicates that something is about to happen.
7th frame - Setting/location:
The seventh frame shows the setting of the school, this shows that it is a teen angst opening as you see this a lot in teen angst films such as Easy A as the opening scene shows the protagonist walking through a school with lots of people around and things such as a school bell/books/lockers around to emphasis this setting, as teenagers go to school so they will be able to relate to it. Also the beginning of the opening scene is set in a party which also shows the teen angst genre as lots of teenagers go to parties and it relates to them.
8th frame - Camera shots:
Frame eight shows an over the shoulder shot, we used this during this conversation because it shows the emotion on each of the characters faces. We also used camera shots such as tracking, when the characters walk into school and into the party. As well as a lot of mid-shots and long shots to show all of the characters in one place at once and it also shows the setting.

9th frame - Genre and how the opening suggests it:
The genre is shown in the opening during the party scene because in lots of teen angst films there are often parties where there are lots of teenagers drinking and having a good time, during the party the props show the genre as they are props that are used are used by teenagers. The clothed that they wear throughout the opening also connotes the type of genre it is, as they are all wearing typical teenage clothes.

Other changes - OMG Teen Angst

We had completed our 4th draft and we were happy with it, but we got more feedback just to be certain and we got ideas of putting in some music whilst our protagonist character wakes up just to make sure it isn't boring as it was silent and wasn't very interesting.

The music we added is music that you would typically hear during the openings of other teen angst films like Easy A for example as we liked that it brought the whole opening together and makes it more exciting and will make people want to watch on.

Another section that we managed to change was the part where the Triple L's find Faye in bed, as they open the door we slowed it down so there is more of a build up of anticipation when they open it and it is more of a shock when Faye gets revealed in Lucy's bed, we did this because it will make the audience want to know what had happened and how it will be resolved between Lucy and Faye as they were meant to be friends so they will want to carry on watching.

Changes for 3rd draft

Changes that we made to make the 3rd draft include differernt fonts for all of our voice overs and titles because once we had got feedback from friends and family members lots of people said they were hard to read because of the font and they weren't up for long enough. So we went back and changed all of the fonts, even for the photos of the main characters when they are introduced.

We changed the fonts for these because before there was a white border around each letter and by taking that away it makes the words stand out more, and makes it easier to read in the time you have to read it.

We changed the font for the title of the Triple L's because we found this font to be more appropriate for the teen angst genre as it looks like more of a font that we have seen in other teen angst films. This one is also alot clearer and easier to read, we have put it in pink because it fits in with the girly type of opening that we are focusing on. Also this photo is the one of the 'mean girls' so we found that pink was the most suitable for them.

We changed all of these parts when the voice overs come on becaue the font wasn't clear enough and they went too quickly and no one could read them in time. Also we wanted to change the font to the one that we used for the titles so it all links in and looks the same. We used pink again because it is a running theme throughtout our whole opening.

We have already noticed changes that we want to some of this draft, where the scene where the Triple L's find Faye in bed, when there is a side angle of them about to see Faye we put a slow motion effect so it makes the whole shock from the Triple L's more dramatic and builds up the anticipation for the reveal.

Changes to 2nd draft

We managed to make all of the changes that we wanted to, these included taking out some small parts and we made enough time up to add all of the paused voice overs in.

These were where we added the voice overs, these ones were to explain who is who and explain the relationships between each character. By adding the voice overs I think it seems more like an opening to a teen angst film as it has less dialogue.
We also added who did the editing and who were the directors, we added these to the party scene with a transition bringing them in because as they come in it goes with the beat of the music and we thought it looked good.

2nd Draft -Teen Angst OMG

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsHoh0XZI9Y&feature=youtu.be

Changes to 1st Draft

We got feedback from our first draft and we decided to add/change a few things, our changes included adding more voice overs as there is too much dialogue and it isn't very clear what's going on it will also seem like more of an opening for a teen angst and also it wasn't very clear who was who and what the actual storyline was so by adding more voice overs it will make it more clear on what's going on.

Also there were some sections can could be taken out all together as they just weren't necessary or were too long. From the feedback we got, it was clear that the school scene of our opening was too long and some of it was not needed for an opening so by shortening that down it will also give us a lot more time for our voice overs.

Voice overs that need to be added are from Faye's perspective and they will introduce all of the main characters by freezing the character and a voice over will be added over the top to say who they are. As well as a voice over before the rewind to state that something is going to happen.

Also we need to add in who it was edited by and who the directors were.

1st Draft - Teen Angst OMG

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDUe1ycX06Y&feature=youtu.be

2nd Changes - Camera shots

These changes are changes that we had to make whilst filming our opening because of things like timing, space and other ideas we had that would make it better.

We had to change quite a few camera shots because of the setting that we filmed it in, on our story board we have put that we were going to use lots of close up shots, we didn't use as many as we first anticipated because if we used them the opening wouldn't have flowed as nicely as we would've wanted to.

Also some long/mid shots we wanted to do on the stairs and in the hall way of the party couldn't have happened like we wanted to as the space didn't allow us to get as far away from the characters. Also just a couple of other shots didn't happen at school because of the change in script, so we just adapted to the changes.

1st Changes - Background

Another one of the changes we made was the background of the home screen of the phone we used. The reason for this is because throughout the whole opening scene there's nothing that gives away that Lucy and Faye are friends. So by changing Faye's wallpaper to a photo of her and Lucy it lets the people watching know that they are actually friends. This is shown when Faye turns off her alarm the next morning.

1st Changes - Script

These changes are changes that we had to make whilst filming our opening because of things like timing, space and other ideas we had that would make it better.

Changed we have needed to make include changes to the script, this is because we had a lot more script than were able to put into our film opening. At the end of our script there was supposed to be a scene of an argument between Lucy and Charlie, but due to timing we had to completely cut it out and change it to just Lucy and Faye bumping into each other in the corridor.

Everything that is highlighted is the parts we have taken out/changed.

OMG! : The script.
Characters: Faye, Christian, Lizzy, Lucy, Lana and Charlie
·         Scene 1: Faye’s bedroom
·       Faye is asleep; she then gets woken up by her alarm clock. She puts her head in her hands as she begins to remember what happened the weekend just been. She gets out of bed, walks over to her mirror and stares at herself in shame. She then says to herself in the mirror (head in her hands)
·         Faye: what have you done Faye?
·         Rewinds from that morning back to the party

·         Scene 2: house party
·         Group of girls walk up to the house and knock on the door. Lucy (who’s party it is) opens the door and says,
·         Lucy: heeeyyy, come in girlies!
·         The camera then follows the girls into the kitchen where the party is in full flow. The people at the party are using a selfie stick which is used to show who their characters are, this will be done using a montage. The camera then tracks the triple L’s through the hallway and walking up the stairs. They cross paths with Charlie(the school heart throb who is also Lucy’s ex-boyfriend)
·         Lucy (flirtatiously): hey Charlie, do you miss me?
·         Charlie (looking flustered) rushes past obliviously.
·          Lucy (looking annoyed) turns to Lizzy and Lana and says
·         Lucy: where did he come from?
·         In unison they all look up to Lucy’s bedroom door which is slightly open and then all rush to see who’s in there. Lucy takes a deep breath and pushes her door open. To Lucy’s horror she finds her ‘friend’ Faye wrapped up in the duvet.
·         Triple L’s: O       M       G!  (introduces title)

·         Scene 3: fast-forward to Faye outside the school
·         Takes a deep breath and walks into school to find Christian, she gets nasty stares and people are whispering about her.
·         Christian: babes, I wouldn’t wanna be you right now….. oh wait I would, Charlie is FIT!
·         Faye: oh Christian this isn’t a time for jokes
·         Christian: don’t worry hun I’ve got your back, those triple L’s don’t intimidate me
·         Christian links arms with faye and then carry on walking to their lesson.
·         They cross paths with Charlie
·         Charlie: (awkwardly) Faye, can we have a chat?
·         Faye: (hesitantly) not here Charlie look who’s coming
·         The triple L’s strut towards them, Faye looks timid but Christian is ready to fight fayes corner.
·         Lucy: well well well… look what the cat dragged in
·         Christian: not today girls she don’t wanna hear it
·         Charlie: alright guys let’s not do this here… Lucy do you not think she’s heard enough already?
·         Lucy: obviously you’re taking her side!
·         Charlie: it’s not like that
·         Lucy: what is it like then?
·         Charlie: look Luc, we were both drunk and it just happened
·         Lucy: alcohol is NEVER an excuse, Faye I thought you were my friend? And you Charlie, I thought you had more respect for me than that….. I guess not.
·         Charlie: common Luc, our relationship was a joke anyway, I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did (laugh to himself)
·         Lucy: (gasps) well if you think that …. Slaps him round the face
·         Ends with the triple L’s walking off and Christian, Faye and Charlie are left looking shocked.

Photos of the settings at school - Teen Angst OMG

We use a school scene for some of our film opening because in teen angst films this is a very popular setting, because it is a good way to show that is a teen angst and that the film is more based at teenagers as they can relate to it as they would also be at school.

This is outside of the reception at the school we filmed it at, this was where Faye and Christian met to walk into school.

This is inside of the doors where Faye and Christian walked into school to be confronted by the Triple L's.

This is the hall way that Faye and Christian walk through to get into school.

This is in the hall way of the school where Faye and Christian will bump into the Triple L's.

Inside the entrance of the school.

This is the location we are using to film all of our school scenes. This shot is used when Faye walks up to school on the first day back.

On Wednesdays, Mean Girls wear pink.
This screenshot is from Mean Girls, one of the main teen angst films that we took our inspiration from.

We decided to film part of our opening in a shcool because in a lot of teen angst films, a school is the main setting of the whole film. So we wanted to incorparate this setting into a least part of the opening.

Also it helps the idea of it being a teen angst as teenagers go to school, this is another way they are able to relate to it.

Cher (Alicia Silverstone) and Dionne (Stacey Dash) look to makeover frumpy new girl Tai (Brittany Murphy).

This is a clip from Clueless, another teen angst film that is based in a school scene.

Characters and costumes - Teen Angst OMG

Characters and costumes

This is Christian, Faye's gay best friend, he is played by Niall Hay. The clothes he is wearing are casual and are very stereotypical to what teenagers wear, this shows it is a teen angst film.
This is Charlie, the 'heartthrob' that all the girls want to be with but most importantly Lucy (the main mean girls ex) he is played by Johnny Crook.
He is wearing a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up and this shows that he has good sense of style and his stance shows that he has a lot of arrogance. All of these things connotes that it is a teen angst.
This is Faye, she is the friendly girl who is liked and friends with everyone, she is played by myself.
Faye is wearing a casual outfit of a black long sleeve top and a leather skirt, this is very stereotypical to a teenager and connotes that it is a teen angst film.
The fact she is smiling in her 'selfie' shows that she is innocent and friendly.

These are the Triple L's Lucy, Lizzie and Lana they are the stereotypical mean girls and they are played by Abbie Arshed, Becca Pennell and Naomi Newell.
They are wearing casual clothes and this again shows that they are teenagers and are very fashionable.
The pose in their 'selfie' is of them pouting and they are all doing the same pose which shows they are very similar and also the pose is more serious than others which shows they are mean.

Extra Characters - Teen Angst OMG

For our opening we needed lots of extra people for the background of the party, so we asked lots of our friends if they would help us. This is a screenshot below of us asking and who said they would do it.

Photos of the settings and props used at party - Teen Angst OMG

This is a photo of the inside of the front door where the main mean girl Lucy lets everyone into the party.

The outside of Lucy's house where the party  is held.

The street where everyone walks into the party.

Lucy's kitchen where the main part of the party takes place.

The stairs where the Triple L's bump into Charlie when he rushed past them.

The top of the stairs where the Triple L's find out what's happened between Charlie and Faye.

A selfie stick was used as a prop to take photos of the main characters to show up in the opening titles. Also we used a selfie stick because it is very popular with teenagers especially at parties and with friends.

Another prop we used were bottles of alcohol, these were used because it shows it is a teen angst film as teenagers usually drink alcohol at parties.

Faye's bedroom where she wakes up and remembers what she done at the party.

Lucy's bedroom at the party where Faye is found in bed.

This is another prop we used, it is the phone we used for the alarm that Faye turns off on the morning of school.

We chose to do a party setting for some of our opening because it is very stereotypical for teen angst films to use a party scene during their films like Clueless for an example (below). This is because it shows that teenagers just want to have fun, party and socialise with their friends and we really liked the idea of this so we wanted to incorporate the same idea into our film.
